The wait is finally over!! The FIFA World Cup is here….welcome to Brazil 2014.

I bloody love football (this is a tweet you may bee from me A LOT over the next few weeks) so the World Cup is BIG news at Essex HQ. To me every match is a BIG match. I don’t just watch if England are playing, I will watch every game I am home (or near a TV) for!

One of the things I love about the FIFA World Cup, and to be honest football in general, is how it can unite people.  It’s a sport adored the world over. Something you can always find to talk about when left in the company of a total stranger.

There will be loads of football parties happening over the next few weeks. When I headed out to Tesco to get the first round of part supplies last week the drinks and snack aisles were full of people planning get togethers to cheer on England and ex-pats who will be congregating to create a little piece of home support abroad.  If you are planning a FIFA World Cup party for Brazil 2014 then here are a few of my best top tips…

Planning A FIFA World Cup Party For Brazil 2014

Games

Not everyone likes football (although I have no idea why as it’s the best game ever) but if you do happen to invite some of those folk that don’t follow the beautiful game here are a few activities to get them up to speed and keep them interested when the match beings.

Sweepstake on the 1st goal scorer. Write down the names of the starting 11 for each team on separate pieces of paper and put them into a hat.  Everyone puts £1 into the pot and picks a player out of the hat. If your player scores first you win the money. This can also be done with sweets for younger guests.  If the first goal scorer has not been picked then the pot rolls over to the next goal.

Lotto squares for time of first goal. Each guest chooses a time period they think the goal will go in.  Again £1 is put into a pot for the winner.

**make some money for a good cause** by splitting the pot half for the winner and ha;f for a charity of their choice.

Commentator Bingo. Football commentary is awash with clichés.  To make the most of this, and ease the pain of listening to Andy Townsend waffling on about losing on penalties again, a good old fashion game of bingo is order.  Loads of great cards to downland can be found online!

GotGotNeed. This is a great game we play with the youngsters! Everyone starts with 5 lives and opens their stickers books to the pages of the teams that are playing. When each player touchers the ball they have to shout out ‘Got’ or ‘Need’. The last person to chout each time loses a life.  When all lives are gone you are out.  The last player left wins a prize. #GotGotNeed

Food

Football parties are not the same as dinner parties. Food served needs to be simple, anything that can be eaten by  hand while standing up really! and maybe things that don’t stain; just incase a big goal is scored just as someone goes to take a mouthful.20140618-113033-41433561.jpg

A ‘Round the World’ cheese board always goes done well in our house, and is in keeping with the international theme of the whole event. You can also never go wrong with a take-away pizza and a few cans of Coca-Cola (currently available at major superstores in 4 x 1.5l promotional packs for only £4 until June 17th.)

Decorations

When it comes decoration the house for your FIFA World Cup party anything goes really. Face paints can be fun, flags  give that real football feel, and silly wigs always please a crowd.

Ultimately though it’s really it’s all about the game, so my tip would be to concentrate more on stocking up on food and drinks (diet coke for the designated drivers like me) than worry about making the perfect St Georges Cross pinata!

I’m so excited that this will most likely be the first World Cup Scarlett has real memories of.  I still remember Gazza crying in 1990 (I was 6) so I’m sure, in most part thanks to the hours we have spent on her sticker album, that at age 5 some of this tournament will stay with her.

It’s sure to be an emotional 4 weeks so make sure you don’t miss a moment, and with the Big Match Planner for inspiration its bound be a fun few weeks to! #BigMatchPlanner
