Anyone who has followed this blog for a while will know I am huge advocate of the ‘there is more to Essex than TOWIE’ movement.  Don’t get me wrong, TOWIE has a place in my heart, and has boosted the local economy no end by increasing our visibility as a tourist destination, but for me the real Essex is one of countryside and natural beauty.

About 20 minute drive from me are the RHS Hyde Hall gardens.  I have lived in the area five years now but, until last week, had never visited Hyde Hall gardens.  Oh my goodness, how had I gone so long without seeing this place?  It was brilliant.

Hyde Hall Gardens Essex

This 360 acre RHS garden located just outside Chelmsford is a wonderful location for a family day out.  Aside for the beautiful plants on display at Hyde Hall gardens there are also two fantastic tea rooms (selling the tastiest carrot cake I have had in ages), garden talks, wooden play areas, nature trails and a large gift shopping containing everything a girl could want and more.

We walked around for hours on our visit last week.  I was particularly taken by the beauty of the ponds. I can see many a summer day spent sitting by the water writing, in my not to distant future.

Hyde Hall Gardens Essex – Children’s Activities

One of the latest additions to the Hyde Hall gardens is the wooden play area – a great treat after a walk round the gardens.  The visor centre at Hyde Hall gardens have a lovely range of nature trails and i-spy activities for the children to complete on your visits too, great way to get them interested in nature from a young age.

During the school holidays Hyde Hall gardens put on seasonal activities for the children as well.  This time of year they have a free Lindt Easter Bunny hunt and (for an addition £2 per child) families can spend some time in the barn making wild art and Easter baskets.

I was so taken by Hyde Hall gardens that I purchased an annual membership there and then.  For £40.50 per year I can have unlimited visits for myself and one family member (under 5′s enter for free) to all four RHS gardens.  You only really have to visit three times in a year to make your money back, and I have already been to Hyde Hall gardens twice this month so I am well on my way!Hyde Hall Gardens Essex

I am so excited to have found this local gem. let me know if you pay it a visit – I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
