Recently I started using a Braun Epilator, and, while I am already seeing the benefits of epilation, I have realised that there needs to be an Epilating For Beginners guide to read before commencing. Because, if you don’t do some basic preparation, my goodness it HURTS!!

Epilation, while not a permanent hair removal method, is great as it leaves lasting smoothness for up to 4 weeks by removing the hair at the root. Epilating for beginners may seem like a daunting task, but over time it can reduce the appearance of hair and encourage them to grow back softer.

Epilating For Beginners

1. Mentally prepare yourself for the pain. It hurts, I’ve had two children naturally and even I could not manage this without shedding a tear.  But you know what they say, no pain no gain – and the gain is worth it if your persevere.

2. Epilating works best on short hair, around the length of a grain of sand. So shave your legs and let the hair grow back for a few days before epilaiting for the first time.

3. Epilation is not just for your legs. Silk-epil epilators are available with different attachments specifically designed for different body parts. Have a full read of your instruction booklet before starting and find the best attachment for the body part you are working on.

4. It is advisable to epilate the evening before you are due to have your skin on show as epilation novices may find that their skin is slightly reddened after epilating. To soothe your skin and create a really smooth look and feel, apply a sensitive, fragrance free, body cream or lotion after epilating.

5. When epilating try to relax and run the epilator in an upward motion, against the direction of hair growth. If need to you can also change the epilation direction to ensure an even smoother finish as some hair growth may have changed direction through years of shaving. Pull your skin tight (like they do when waxing) as this can also help to reduce the pain.

6. Finally, between epliations, regular exfoliation will help prevent in-grown hairs by removing the dead cells and giving the fresh hair growth a “clear path” to the surface.

I have been following this Epilating For Beginners guide for 2 months now and am really starting to see a difference. It still hurts but the pain is subsiding, and I am loving how smooth my legs now feel.
