I love spontaneity.

Making plans at the last minute, with no time to build up expectations, then just seeing where the day or evening may take us.

Even now I’m parent I still like to be spontaneous.  I like taking the girls to new places and surprising them with new experiences. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

On Friday I was working in London, and lucky enough to be able to take the girls with me, so once work was done The Big Smoke was ours to explore and enjoy.

We met The Essex Husband after he finished his shift and took a bus through the streets of London (best way to see the sights) over to Covent Garden.

We took a walk round the cobbled streets, looked with childlike awe at the wonders in the Disney store and then settled down to watch some street theatre.  What happened next shocked us both. Scarlett, my formally shy (until she got to know you, and then you couldn’t shut her up) daughter pushed her way to the front of the crowd, sat herself down and put her hand up every-time the artist asked for a helper.  My little girl is growing up.

There are some very talented people performing on out streets, they kept us entertained us all evening long.  Some we gave £1, some we gave £5. We laughed, we clapped, we cheered and, in Orlaiths case, we cried (it turns out a man jumping round in a sack trying to escape from chains is a little frightening for a 1 year old – who knew??) but we had an amazing time making memories as a family.  And it was all of the cuff. And it was budget friendly. What a lovely surprise for us all.

I cant wait to take the girls back to Covent Garden. I never realised what a great, entertaining place it is for little ones.  Although if we leave them at home next time we could visit the Punch and Judy, one of the most wonderful (albeit a little over priced) pubs in London.

Spontaneous trips out always turn out to be the best, there’s something about the ‘oh cool we’re off!’ that just sets things up to be excellent :)

It sounds like you had a really lovely evening. I find the days and evenings which are unplanned tend to be the most relaxing and most enjoyable because you have no expectations so things can’t go wrong as easily.

Oh, I love taking the kids to Covent Garden. It has become a running joke in our family – nothing to do on a nice(ish) weekend? Covent Garden it is!
    Lovely photos!
