Scarlett’s birthday is just around the corner and I am in full panic mode as to if I am organised enough, Today I welcome Gemma Collier with her tip on preparing ahead so you can enjoy the big day with your kids.

Preparing ahead so you can enjoy the big day with your kids

How often have you had that feeling at the end of a child’s birthday that you have spent too much time ‘doing’ and not enough time ‘being’ with them on their special day?

It’s a trap that we all fall into, wanting to make the day go well for everyone else but then feeling that you’ve missed out on spending that special time with your child. There are ways that you can get around this though, and if you do a little advance preparation, you can all enjoy those red letter days together as a family.

Big presents need preparation

Often, you’ll have one present that is your son or daughter’s main present. And those major presents are often items that require pre-assembly. For example, you may have a toddler that you’ve chosen a play kitchen or shop for and while a big box to unwrap is a treat in itself, do you really want to spend the rest of their birthday putting the gift together? If possible, assemble the kitchen a few days in advance and store it somewhere where the birthday child won’t find it – in the garage under a sheet perhaps?

And it doesn’t stop as the kids get bigger. You might be inspired by this blog post about GLTC’s children’s desks to get an older boy or girl a great little study area in their bedroom. And with a gift like this, you’ve got a huge range of accessories and additions that other people can give them to go with it – to give their birthday a theme. For example, you might want to ask relatives to give them a desk lamp, or a set of matching bookshelves to go with the desk. While you’re making such a big change to their room, you could get some other accessories like a new rug and a notice board for their wall. They’ll end up with a fantastic looking study area in their bedroom, and hopefully they’ll benefit from having a better environment to do their homework in.

Of course, with something as large as a desk and shelving units, you can’t really put the whole thing together without them seeing it, so the best you can do with something like this is build up the different sections and have them stored somewhere out of sight, so you can present it to them on their big day and only have a minimal amount of assembly to do.

Party time

Hosting a party is always fun, but it can be pretty stressful too. Consider having the birthday party on a different day, so that you and your family can have a special day together on the birthday itself. Of course, once the children are going to school, their birthdays may fall in term time, in which case your hands are a little tied but you can still have a special birthday evening as a family.

If you decide to have the party on the real birthday, then you can make it easier on yourself by minimalizing the work you need to do on the day. Of course, it depends where you’re having the party – if it’s at a venue where the activity and the food is also provided, then that’s the easiest option. You and the birthday child just need to turn up a little earlier than everyone else! However, if you’re having a party at home, the more you can prepare ahead the better. For example, don’t clean the house on the morning itself – get it done ahead of time. Prepare everything you need for different games that will be played and get as much of the food as possible ready a day ahead. The more effort you put in during the days leading up to a child’s birthday, the more you’ll be able to relax and enjoy their special day with them.
