TRY OUT

When winter draws to a close, you may have forgotten what it feels like to go outside without four layers of clothing. However, before you know it, it will be time to dig out your skirts, shorts, vests and sandals again and if you haven’t prepared your skin for that time, it won’t be a pretty sight.

Give yourself a good base to work on

Your skin renews itself constantly; old cells die and new ones grow. This means that, over time, a layer of dead cells can accumulate on your skin, causing it to look dull and discoloured and to feel dry and rough. Luckily, this is easily remedied by a good regime of exfoliation. Probably the most convenient time to do this is when you shower. There are a number of products, such as creams and special sponges, which will help to remove dead skin without causing any damage, leaving you smooth and glowing.

Keep it supple

With smooth, regularly exfoliated skin, it’s very easy to keep it in better condition by applying moisturiser in the morning and night and even in between for rough or exposed areas, such as hands. If you apply moisturising body oil to your skin after showering, it is absorbed very easily and helps to keep in the moisture gained during your shower.

What’s on the inside matters too

It’s not all about what you do to your skin that makes the difference; it’s also about what you do for your skin. Eating the right food, for example, can help your skin to look healthier. Foods that are high in antioxidants, such as fruit and pulses, can help your skin avoid and deal with damage, leaving it looking and feeling better. Keeping your body hydrated with drinks that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine is also vital, as this helps the cells to retain their elasticity. In addition to what you eat and drink, getting enough exercise is very important for your skin as well as your heart and lungs. Whenever possible, take the stairs instead of using the lift and leave the car at home.

Respect the sun

Although you may think you are safe from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays during the winter, your skin can still sustain long-term damage if you don’t take steps to protect it properly. You can do this by applying either a sun protection cream or by using moisturiser or foundation with a sun protection factor element. By doing this, your skin will remain more youthful-looking.

Fake the sun-kissed look

Protecting yourself from the sun doesn’t mean you have to stay pale. Rather than risking the dangers of using sun beds, you can opt for fake tan products you can use at home, as there are many easy-to-use ones available. The key to a good application is to have clean, exfoliated and regularly moisturised skin, but since you were planning on doing those things anyway, you’ll be ready to go as soon as you get your product. Just imagine how good it will be when the sun comes out and you already look as though you’ve just come back from a holiday!

When your skin looks great and feels great, you don’t mind leaving it uncovered. By starting your preparation early, you’ll have holiday skin long before the good weather decides to grace us with its presence and you’ll be desperate to show it off! So don’t leave it any longer; start getting ready for the sunshine right away!
