Sometimes all it takes to have fun is your imagination. Here are three great games to play with paper and pencil as a family.

Games To Play With Paper And A Pencil

Hangman – The first of our great games to play with paper and pencil is Hangman. One player thinks of a word and writes a blank/dash for every letter included. The other player guesses letters until the word or phrase can be sussed out. Each time a wrong guess is made another part is added to the ‘hangman’. (eight wrong guesses is standard in our house: hanging stand, noose, head, body, two arms and two legs.) You have to guess the correct letters to fill in the blanks before the hanging man is complete or you lose.

Squares – If you are looking for group games to play with paper and a pencil then squares is great. Firstly you will need to draw a grid of dots ( we normally play on a grid of 20×20). Each player take turns, drawing a single line between two unjoined adjacent dots. Every time a player completes the fourth side of a box and makes a square they earn one point ( put your initials in the box to help make counting up points at the end easier) and then take another turn.  The game ends when no more lines can be placed. The winner of the game is the player with the most points.

Who Am I? – Another great entry for the ‘games to play with paper and a pencil as a group’ category is Who Am I? Split your paper into enough pieces so that each member of your group can have one section each. On their own piece of paper each player writes down a famous person and passes it to the person on their left without the recipient seeing what is written. Each player then displays their new piece of paper on their forehead (the very classy lick and stick works wonders here) for the rest of the group to see. Taking it in turns each player must ask a yes/no question (e.g am I a man? Do I work in Politics?), this is repeated until a correct guess is made and someone can correctly identify who they are. This person is the winner.
