Nestled in the picturesque coastline of South East Cornwall is Polperro, one of the most scenic working harbors in the UK, if not the world. No trip to this part of the world would be complete without a day trip to Polperro.
We took the short bus ride from Looe to Polperro (£4 return fare) to spend the morning walking round this little piece of living history and explore all it has to offer.
As soon as you arrive in Polperro you are transported back in time. With it’s narrow streets, white washed cottages and swam of fishing boats, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in 19th century Britain; a time when Polperro was at the forefront of a thriving Pilchard export trade.
Walking down through the main streets of Polperro is a must. You’ll find a plethora of restaurants and pubs offering mouth-watering menus, many art galleries displaying local talent, and shop upon shop of seaside treasures for you to devour.
Once you reach the harbor you’ll be greeted with a bustling fishing village perfect for a picture postcard.
You will also find the Polperro museum of smuggling and fishing. Housed in an old Pilchard Factory once owned by Teglio family from Italy. Certainly worth a visit to help you get a feel of what the history of Polperro is all about, it certainly makes you view the village in a different light on the way back up.
If the thought of walking back up the hill to your car or bus stop is a step to far for your tired legs and full stomach, then there may be help at hand. For £1 each you can ride the Polperro tram, a great novelty way to see the village and rest your weary limbs at the same time.
We have a great time experiencing this lovely working fishing village in Cornwall, I would certainly recommend a day trip to Polperro when you are next visiting South Cornwall.
Just come back from a week in polperro beautiful place n well worth a visit x
Isnt it just? We loved it – such a wonderful place to holiday.
It looks so lovely there. I love traditional seaside/fishing towns and villages x
Only one thing sadly missing now which used to set it apart from other places…the lovely Horse Bus. Been visiting Polperro for years on holiday since I was a kid and then with my own daughter and we used to really look forward to seeing and riding on it. The horses were lovely. We still visit but it has lost some of it’s attraction for us now.
Oh that sounds lovely – it is a shame it has gone.
